Afro Beat / Afro Pop / World Fusion “ | The Best of the Black President is simply a stellar collection that bests any two-disc collection out there as it represents the continued evolution of Fela Kuti's music from the 1960s through the 1990s. Compiled by son Femi, many tracks are edits of the originals -- "Gentleman," "Water Get No Enemy," "O.D.O.O." -- whose power is not reduced. Still others are second-halfs -- like "ITT," "Coffin for Head of State," "No Agreement," "Army Arrangement," and "Shuffering and Schmiling." Still others, such as "Zombie," "Sorrow Tears and Blood," "Shakara" and "Roforofo Fight," are presented in their original form. | ” |

Jazz / Cool / Modal Music / Piano “ | This CD reissue is the companion to Jazzhouse, for both were recorded on the same night at the Montmartre in Copenhagen. Evans' regular trio of the time (which included bassist Eddie Gómez and drummer Marty Morell) is in exuberant form performing before an enthusiastic crowd. In addition to versions of his famous "Waltz for Debby" and "Time Remembered," Evans plays seven of his favorite standards, including "You're Gonna Hear from Me," "Nardis," and "Emily." An excellent all-around set that was not originally released until 1988. | ” |

The music is performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. The album was released in May 1978 on RCA Records. It reached number 136 on the US Pop Albums chart. Bowie was RCA's third choice to undertake the narration for Peter and the Wolf behind Alec Guinness and Peter Ustinov, who had both turned the album down. Bowie has since said that it was a Christmas present for his son, Duncan Jones, then at 7 years old. | ” |

Jazz / Cool / Hard Bop / Trumpet “ | In an odd bit of programming, Columbia placed the ballads from Miles Davis' February 12, 1964, concert on My Funny Valentine and the uptempo romps on this LP. Davis, probably a bit bored by some of his repertoire and energized by the teenage Tony Williams' drumming, performed many of his standards at an increasingly faster pace as time went on. These versions of "So What," "Walkin'," "Four," "Joshua," "Seven Steps to Heaven," and even "There Is No Greater Love" are remarkably rapid, with the themes quickly thrown out before Davis, George Coleman, and Herbie Hancock take their solos. Highly recommended and rather exciting music, it's one of the last times Davis would be documented playing a full set of standards. | ” |

New Romantic / New Wave / Synth Pop / Electronic “ | The Pleasure Principle was the point where the singer became a huge international solo star, even reaching the Top 10 in the United States with 'Cars' and Top 20 with the album. The Pleasure Principle pioneered electronic pop music on a new scale it was a much bigger success worldwide than Kraftwerk's releases or anything from the influential but still relatively 'culty' Bowie/Eno Berlin trilogy. And the fact that it was different and had a major impact in US Numan performed 'Cars' and 'Praying To The Aliens' in front of 40 million people on the Saturday Night Live Show means that there. | ” |

Jazz / Post Bop / Modern Creative / Piano “ | It is very much out of character for the prolific Keith Jarrett and his producer Manfred Eicher to hold anything back, yet they've done it here, releasing these live tapes of Jarrett's European quartet ten years after they were recorded. Presumably, they did it in order not to distract attention from Nude Ants, which was recorded a week after these concerts, but that never stopped them before from just piling on more discs. In any case, these Tokyo recordings were too good to hide; the quartet had reached an interactive creative high around this time, often burning at the rarified level that Nude Ants reached. | ” |

To tie in with these events, Universal Classics & Jazz France has undertaken the most ambitious, abundantly prolific and extravagant record-project ever devoted to Michel Legrand: a 15CD boxed-set which brings together every face and aspect of every domain on the Legrand continent; in other words, songs, jazz, original film-soundtracks, symphonic works, musicals… | ” |

New Wave / New Romantic / Synth Pop “ | After a delay in 2006, New Romantics old and, well...new can enjoy the highly anticipated release of OMD's Architecture and Morality, remastered and enhanced with DVD footage. This third album from the bruised nucleus of bassist/singer Andy McCluskey and keyboardist/electronics enthusiast Paul Humphreys is often regarded as their seminal work, not least because it achieved critical and commercial success (over three million sales and several top ten hits) unlike its predecessor Organisation (for all its sonic ambition, overly challenging) and its follow up Dazzle Ships (which lacked memorable songs). | ” |

Classical / Opera “ | Recorded at the 2007 Salzburg Festival, this production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin features an excellent, young cast and the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by maestro Daniel Barenboim. Director Andrea Breth has created an intimate production that mines the depths of expression and charisma of her singer-actors and integrates silent secondary episodes and miniature dramas to heighten the intensity of the story. Jazz / Hard Bop / Progressive Jazz / Saxophone “ | Tenor-saxophonist Johnny Griffin is showcased with a ten-piece group on this CD reissue of a Riverside LP which is augmented by a previously unreleased version of "Wade in the Water." The repertoire is a bit unusual with some spirituals (including "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" and "Deep River"), a tune apiece by Bobby Timmons ("So Tired") and Junior Mance, and three originals from Norman Simmons who arranged all of the selections. Trumpeter Clark Terry and trombonists Matthew Gee and Julian Priester have some short solos but the emphasis is on the leader who is in typically spirited and passionate form. | ” |

Jazz / Funk / Soul / Fusion “ | Since the first volume of Blaxploitation used most of the obvious picks for this kind of compilation, the compilers of this volume are left free to make plenty of fresh choices. As a result, Blaxploitation, Vol. 2: The Sequel boasts plenty of enticing rarities like "Let's Clean Up the Ghetto" by the Philadelphia All-Stars, a funky message tune voiced by a collection of the stars from the Philadelphia-International label (including Lou Rawls and Teddy Pendergrass). Another fine rarity is the album-length version of the Temptations' classic "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone": At 11-plus minutes, this slickly orchestrated slice of ghetto realism plays out like an urban symphony. | ” |
